Top 4 Things to do in New Zealand's Northland

New Zealand has so many great places to visit! But we especially love the Northland. We’ve visited this area a couple of times and have found some favorite places! Here are our top 4 things to do in New Zealand’s Northland.

Kauri Forest

You can’t visit New Zealand and not see a kauri tree! Kauri trees are endemic to New Zealand. They are the sequoia trees of the country and their existence is being endangered by a disease called Kauri Dieback. The Northland area has some of the largest trees in the country. Our favorite kauri trees are Yakas, the Four Sisters, and Tane Mahuta.

90 Mile Beach

One of the most famous beaches in New Zealand is called 90 Mile Beach. But it’s not actually 90 miles! However, it is a long stretch of flat beach that goes on for miles at the very northwestern side of the island. At low tide you can carefully drive your car along the shore. And it is awesome! Our kids love taking a turn at the wheel. We’ve seen a dead shark along this beach as well as tons and tons of dead jellyfish! It is a very cool place and an absolute must see!

Cape Reinga

At the very top of the North Island is a lighthouse at Cape Reinga. If you visit here on a sunny day, be prepared to have your breath taken away! It is a stunning view! You are surrounded by bright blue water and gorgeous cliffs. You can easily see where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. It's such a cool place to just sit and take in the beauty.

Te Paki Sand Dunes

Just near Cape Reinga is another fun spot to explore…Te Paki Sand Dunes. You will find huge hills of soft sand to climb and slide down on boogie boards. It’s the best! You can spend hours hiking up the hills and zooming down on the boards. It’s a great workout and a ton of fun…win win!

These top 4 places to visit in New Zealand’s Northland are the coolest. You’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable time and great scenery to capture on film. They’re our family’s favorites!
